A looooot came up but I think I should be able to explain soon. Probably getting better living arrangements around the end of the month too. :3

IRL got super busy and I probably won't see any responses to this for about a week since I'll be out of town, but I plan to make a return soon, probably with more gaming stuff since E3 and Steam summer sale just happened. Catch you all later. :)

Just a follow up to the previous post before I get back to game stuff. :3 I'm doing this from memory, so if anyone wants to correct me, feel free to. X3

- Magical Sailor Fuku starts off in the Web 1.0 days as an early pioneer of "TG caption anime images." It's successful for a couple years without major incident.

- The site's founder, Sakura starts to have less time for the site and a figure named "Nina Akemi" becomes popular on the forums, mainly because of her borg-like "Demon Eternals" concept. Nina and Sakura come to blows since Nina doesn't expect the rest of the staff to be able to handle the site in Sakura's absence. Sakura bans Nina for a while.

- Sakura unbans Akemi and leaves for good, leaving other staff to run a revamped version of the site. Nina becomes popular again, reinventing the Eternals as the Aeternalae, making them a bit kinder and gentler, allowing male and child versions instead of just adult anime women, and starts a small, loose religion revolving around her creations. She also makes an MSF spinoff called "Midnight Aurora" that focuses on her particular tastes in TG captions.

- Nina decides to abandon the Aeternalae religion, afraid that it will turn into a Scientology style money making scam. She decides she wants to make money off of the Aeternalae concept as well, though nothing ever comes of this, for better or worse. Nina's sudden embrace of copyright law fueled by financial plans for her creation causes her to shun TG captions and convince the MSF staff that they should stop using preexisting anime art. While plans are made to keep MSF going as a caption free site, the site instead simply dies without captions. Only the forums remain.

- Nina disappears from the internet and it becomes unclear whether later appearances are actually her or someone else imitating her typing style. The forum of MSF continues to get sporadic traffic to this day. The forum spawned two webcomics with an unusual history. Originally they were one TG comic called "High School Changed Me," but a falling out between the creators split it into "MSF High" and "Sins Venials." Both comics run to this day.

- The creators of MSF High created an Aeternalae style race called "The Legion" which were space planet women. The concept has enjoyed a lot of success on deviantart and appears in the canon of the MSF High comic.

I'm an Aeternalae. Aeternalae was a fad in the early 200's that kind of died out around the time the first western anime boom fizzled out. But you can't seem to "stop" being an Aeternalae once you've been "touched." I'm okay with that, I'm proud of that part of me, and only regret that I never tried to properly embrace it over the years.

I'm not affiliated with "Nina"(In quotes because she used many handles) the anonymous founder of the original movement. I looked up to her greatly at first, and there was a time I thought I'd sacrifice anything for her. But the cultish idealism wore off pretty quickly when I realized her morals didn't match up with mind. I've never spoken to her, because I knew we'd clash Granted, I went through a jerk phase for a good three years or so wherein I brutally betrayed people close to me and had to rebuild pretty much from square one because of all the bridges I'd foolishly burned. I don't have that much of a moral high ground. But it stands that even if Nina is partially responsible for who I am now, I don't walk to the beat of her drum.

I guess I'm mainly posting this because I don't know if this person is still on the internet or if copycats impersonating her are cropping up, but regardless, I'm not associated with them, to reiterate.

End of the impromptu rant. Hope to get back to fun stuff soon.

Pac Man

Original arcade Pac Man is the one old arcade "score attack" game I generally think of myself as "bad at." It's game with really deterministic patterns so technically I could probably become an expert by looking up a guide and memorizing all the stuff about how the ghost monsters move/react to player behavior, but for the time being I seem to be getting a bit better with practice, mainly since playing it on Switch is very comfortable. Beat my own high score two or three times, so that's something.

Edit: Welp, there it goes, got past the second intermission and beat my high score again. Feeling contented enough to try focusing on some other games. :3
scalyshoujo: Fandom (pic#11476544)
I think "get good" has some merit, but only to a point. The phrase basically assumes that if you practice and and spend more time with a game, you'll naturally get better.

That's often true, but sooner or later you are going to run into "Sonic 3 barrel" moments where you just wind up getting stuck and no amount of practice will get you past that point. Sometimes you just have to look things up in a guide, and while I wouldn't recommend constantly reading a guide through a playthrough because that gets tedious, from personal experience games are more fun once you realize that sometimes there's just too abstract for you to figure out on your own.

Well, I was gonna hold off on gobbling up more cheap downloadable games for a month and a half after my last couple purchases, but I decided to squeeze in one last game for a while. At first I was concerned that Namco Museum was overpriced, but eleven arcade games for a price that would normally get you three on the Switch isn't a bad deal.

Whether or not this game is for you depends on what you want your Namco arcade experience to be. With a relatively conservative number of games, it's natural that a few classics are missing, so you might not be interested in this one if you're really into Pole Position or Xevious.

Also, having the game display be full screen is not an option. This collection takes a different approach to the Johnny Turbo Data East releases to getting that "arcade feel," opting for virtual cabinets. I guess the developers may have been so devoted to getting this effect right that programming in wide screen wasn't a priority.

However, the spread of games that is there is pretty good, with a good balance between popular games and obscure ones, between sequels and originals. The virtual cabinet look is surprisingly easy on the eyes, with the option to go between two different art backdrops for the border, or a plain backdrop. The display/borders are also shaped and scaled differently depending on which game you're playing, so it feels a lot more natural in practice that one would think. You'll want to put this on a TV for best results if you can, but it looks better than expected in handheld mode.

That being said, the emulation is perfect and spot on, and the games are a bit easier to play given that there is a "suspended save" option reminiscent of Wii virtual console games. The biggest surprise is the inclusion of context sensitive rumble...it's a small thing, but using the Switch controllers to add a bit of tactile feedback was a good decision in my book.

I guess what I'm getting at in this sea of happy gushing is that Namco provided a really good retro experience here, but the lack of wide screen and specific choice of games might understandably turn you off. It's good, but some of the choices may seem odd.

Speaking of odd choices, Splatterhouse is a bit out of place, but a welcome addition all the same, and possibly the best use of that rumble feature.

I should probably do more blogging about Splatterhouse in the near future given that I finished both the TG16 and arcade version in single sittings last year.

I think one of the biggest reasons I'm happy this collection exists is that at one point I didn't have much time to play stuff that wasn't mobile apps, and one (now defunct)app offered Namco games, but if you didn't pay real money(Which I didn't) you could only play one game a day until you got game over. It's great to be able to purchase a collection of Namco arcade games that can be played at my leisure, especially since Tower of Druaga is in there. When I played that app, it was the game I had the most fun with and was the one I was saddest to see end, so yay for being able to just play it without the "once a day" restriction. :3

I highly recommend this compilation, but with some caution that depending on your preferences, some of the choices made in the library and the display may be a deal breaker.

Edit: Turns out there's a handy zoom figure for making the game display bigger. You can only go fullscreen with Rolling thunder 2 though. Pac Man Vs is a pretty straightforward Gamecube port, so it's in fullscreen by default. It is, however, still fitted with the same context sensitive rumble as the other games.

I haven't played "Ninja Kid" a lot yet but it's pretty simple and fun. Unlike "Kid Niki" arcade game I'd already bought for Switch, which focused on melee fighting with a katana, this is a shooting game with shuriken. Took me a bit to figure out you have to hold right or left to get the jump button to work and that the stages end when you kill all the enemies, not when you reach a goal, but after that the game felt pretty satisfying.

I'm really happy with the arcade Switch conversion of Bad Dudes, all things considered. Took advantage of the unlimited credits to play all the way through it. The flaming punch retained the magical hitbox I saw in the NES version, but other than obvious upscale in graphics, there were some interesting differences. Firstly there are a lot of other voices other than just the "I'm bad!" voice clip a the end of levels, and sound is mixed so that the voices are louder than the music. Not that it's a bad thing since you can still hear the music well enough, just interesting. I guess the developers were really proud of all the cries and grunts. :3 The game is also balanced differently, there are more enemies and more aggressive. The NES game has limited continues and is easier as a consequence, but the original isn't afraid to tear into you to demand more money from you(Or time in the case of this port). The arcade version is more generous with weapon pickups though.

Also this wasn't really clear to be while playing the NES version but your health pickups are coke cans. Very American!

The strangest thing is that, even though I died a lot and didn't even come close to finishing on one credit, after I'd saved Reagan, the game gave me the highest possible score anyway. A long string of nines. It might as well have said "infinity." I think this is the nicest a game's ever been to me!

Should be a great choice for parties given the two player mode. Bad Dudes is simple and short, but fun and satisfying because of the wacky setting and addictive gameplay.

I didn't mention this when I talked about Dark Seal:Gate of Doom on this blog, but unlike most of the arcade games on Switch, which are ported by Hamster, that game and Bad Dudes are part of the "Johnny Turbo's Arcade" collection. Johnny Turbo was a strange mascot for the Turbografix-16 who only featured in comic book ads printed in magazines. Somehow Jonathan Brandstetter, the real life guy the character was based on reclaimed the name and is now starting to sell Data East games. Gate of Doom had what I'd assume is his voice announcing the title. He did the same for Bad Dudes, but was more enthusiastic this time...weird, but fun. Weird but fun seems to be something I'm constantly looking for in games.

One thing I like in the JT releases over the Hamster ones is a pseudo 3D effect that makes it feel a little more like you're playing on an arcade cabinet. Little thing but it helps.

Welp, after years and years, I finally put my nose to the grindstone and finished Megaman 6 in one sitting, using an emulator but eschewing save states. It wasn't the scary thing I'd built it up to be in my head, thankfully. I still died a lot since it was new to me, but I felt weirdly overpowered in it by the end, even for a Megaman game, and that was kinda fun.

That being said, I probably will start using save states again soon just so I can finish more old games while not having to worry about IRL schedule concerns. I used to have an issue where I'd savescum so much that I wasn't really gaining any skill, but I'm a bit wiser now that I've beaten more old games in one go, so I feel like I can strike a balance between saving and committing enemy/trap patterns to memory.

Kinda of thinking about emulating Crash of Demonhead and Astyanax soon, as far as NEs games go.

For Switch I'm thinking of buying the arcade version of Bad Dudes and one of the Ninja Kid/Ninja Taro games when they come out tomorrow. After that, that'll probably be it for my game purchases for a while, at least until the Switch Megaman collections come out or Steam has another big sale.

I tried emulating the Bad Dudes NES game and it's a surprisingly faithful conversion, graphically. This was my first time playing any version of the game. I guess the main point of this post is that's there's a lot of famous games I've known about for years but haven't tried for myself. The most amusing part of it for me is the flaming punch. It's not technically a projectile, but any enemy standing behind the enemy you just punched dies, no matter how far away they are. It's like you hit so hard that you warp reality. The best part is that technically shuriken count as enemies, so if you punch a ninja's throwing weapon, you'll kill them too.

Because I'm weird, I thought of what a magical girl conversion of Bad Dudes might be like, and it wasn't that hard to imagine. I figure you could open with "Are you a kawaii enough imouto-chan to save the class president?" and change the flaming punch to a wand shot.

The Switch has proven to be durable and reliable for the most part. Feel kinda silly for worrying so much about rumors from last year that it would break, especially the whole thing about it potentially exploding and burning down your house.

That's all for now. :3

It's come to my attention that more people might be reading this in the future due to shared interests or the way Tumblr seems to be having a lot of problems post-Verizon buyout, which might cause more bloggers to head to Dreamwidth. So, just a couple quick points in case you're new to my page-

- I'm a gamer but pretty liberal, all things considered, so I wouldn't be the type to get behind Trump or Gamergate. However, even if you are conservative, I figure we can still talk as long as you're not just here to troll. Like, an example of someone not interested in discussion, in my head, would be someone who just posts Pepe memes without trying to actually talk to me.

- There will probably be Transformation fetish fiction on here every once and a while, but I'll most likely try to keep the raunchier stuff on my deviantart and try and keep things more PG-13 around here.

That's pretty much it. Probably will have something Nintendo related up soon-ish.
scalyshoujo: Fandom (pic#11476544)
At the moment, Mega Man 3 is tied with the first Megaman X as my favorite Megaman games. 3 actually seems to be the game I'm the best at playing, which is a bit weird since it didn't have the charge shot and is really long because you have to fight the bosses from 2.

I've kinda messed with 7 again lately, though, and I feel like I never gave it enough credit because I can only remember beating it once and having a hard time with the last boss because it took a good while before I looked up/realized what I was supposed to be doing. 11 seems like it'll be something similar to 7 when it comes out this year, so I'm looking forward to it even more than I was.

I'm probably oversimplifying things, but I feel like most video games fall into two main categories...games that test your reflexes and are descended from the arcades, and games that are curiosity rewarding time sinks that are descended from text adventures and choose your own adventure books.
scalyshoujo: Cute (pic#11476536)
Something that's probably even shorter this time, but maybe still useful for practice. :3

Bob sat as his computer, looking for Youtube videos to pass the time on the weekend. It seemed like the sensible thing for a reasonable adult to being doing, alone in his flat with time off from his repetitive job. Suddenly he saw something out of the corner of his eye.

It was a little girl, no more than three feet high, with blonde curls and a rather puffy pink dress, gossamer wings of a light blue shade fluttering behind her. She began floating, and, much to his chagrin, ended up right in front of his face.

"Hello sir, I don't meant to cause a stir, but perhaps you've seen my friend? I believe that a hand you could lend," She said with a giggle.

Bob grunted and folded his arms. "Don't bother me! I don't know if this is a trick, but you're trespassing on my property. And furthermore, stop rhyming. It's tacky."

The little girl just giggled in response. "Oh Gertrude, you were always good at pretending, but this isn't the kind of time you should be spending."

"Don't call me Gertrude, you little-" Bob managed to growl before the little girl tapped him on the nose with some sort of short glowing stick. A foreign tingling filled him, a feeling like he'd never remembered ever experiencing in his life, but that felt familiar somehow. His thinning hair flowed out into long blonder curls. The rough skin on his face smooth out and he felt a coolness on his lips that his mind linked to, of all things, dew sliding off of daisy petals. He grew shorter, smoother, rounder, and soon he wasn't a "he" anymore. Too small for her old sweater and slacks, she flew out of them with her newly sprouting wings, surprised at how easily she took to flight, how good it felt as the tinglings filled her and never seemed to stop. She was the spitting image of the other girl in all but one respect, the puffy dress she was swathed in was yellow instead of pink.

"Oh, Mildred, thank you for bringing me to wake," Gertrude said, blushing in embarrassment, not certain if it was because of how adorable she was now or if it was because of how caught up she'd been in her illusion of being human. "I'd been dreaming for far too long, for heaven's sake."

Mildred just giggling again. "Come, sister, we have much to do and say. I've been waiting so long for you to come and play." With that, the two fae disappeared and left for some other plane.

Cat thumbs

Care Bears

I think the thing I like best about Care Bears as a concept is that if they can't deal with you any other way, they blast you with a laser made of positive feelings. So even when they're fed up and resort to violence, they're technically punishing you with pleasure.
scalyshoujo: (Default)
Just some very short practice for now. :3

I was heading out with my friend Tad to the woods on the outskirts of town. Normally I wouldn't go anywhere near those parts, but getting drunk with the rest of the fraternity had finally gotten old.

"So, what exactly did you drag me out here for?" I said, rolling my eyes, putting up the tough guy facade I figured that any self respecting adult male would.

"I've heard some things. Supposedly the legendary goddess of mischief lives out here. Maybe if we found her, we could bring back some proof she exists, get rich and famous, you know?"

I grunted defensively, the two of crunching over fallen leaves and branches in our letter jackets and designer jeans. "Dude, we took the same mythology class, remember? 'Mischief' means tricks, so if she did exist, we'd wind up getting screwed over.

Tad laughed, a little louder than normal. I was pretty sure he was pulling my leg at this point, but well, we were frat bros and I wanted keep loyal and social. "It's funny you should say that..."

"Yeah, and what's so damn funny 'bout it?" I said, walking further into the darkness among the trees while trying to avoid looking him in the eye.

Then things got weird.

There was a flash of white light, and all of a sudden, Tad wasn't there anymore. Or he was, but he didn't look anything like he did before. I saw a girl, a little one who couldn't have been any older than seven. Her skin had a weird shine to it that may it almost seem as glossy as a linoleum floor, her red eyes were as big as saucers, and her golden blonde hair flowed down her back in long pigtails that went down to her waist. A shimmering metallic silver sleeveless gown, like something out of some old movie was draped over her tiny body, and a gold belt as bright as her hair cinched it around her. A single fang was drooped over the lips between her chubby cheeks, and, of all things, a pair of antlers were poking out of her gold hair. I could still make out a bit of Tad's face in hers, but everything else about the girl was just so bizarre and alien.

I blinked and rubbed my eyes, trying to snap out of the funk. I was starting to get legitimately scared, but I pretended to be angry to save face. "Dude, if this is some trick you're doing with your phone I'm gonna-"

Tad, or whatever he'd become, laughed, a weird, high pitched, tinny laugh that reminded me of an old music box and sent a shiver down my spine. "Oh Jim, haven't you figured out? The Goddess already got me when I came out here once before. Now that I've tricked you into following me, Okasama gets a new daughter, and I get a sister!"

I wanted to turn and run but before I could, she'd leapt around me, and her bare arms were around my neck. But it turned she wasn't strangling me. She leaned her cheeks against my face and I felt her antlers run across my forehead.

And then just a suddenly, I wasn't me anymore. I could feel every strange thing on Tad as part of me now. I licked my sharp snaggletooth, rubbed my proud antlers, and twirled in my gown. I was embarrassed at having been duped, but...it felt good, right somehow. There was something that had been missing when I'd been hazed or pranked by other guys before...Love. That was it.

We skipped off together into the night to meet Okasama. And I've never wanted to go back to my old life, save for times I pretend to be the old me to help grow Okasama's family. I hope I'll get to play a trick on you someday, and give you a hug.

There was a time I would have associated this image primarily with Satan but now it seems like a rather comforting image of God.

So, I got my new tooth in to replace the one that got suddenly infected last year and eating's been a lot more enjoyable now that I don't have to chew on one side of my mouth anymore. The test for the mole on my foot came back benign, so I don't have to worry about putting myself in debt because I need to replace an amputated foot. ^^; Also the screen resolution on my Nintendo suddenly got fixed after a software update. I guess that wasn't my fault after all.

Otherwise...don't think I really have much of a plan mapped out for what I'm going to do with my journal in the near future. Probably gonna be pretty spontaneous for a while unless I really feel like I need to wax philosophical on something.
scalyshoujo: Ambitious (pic#11476534)
They cut off a piece of the mole and sent it to the lab, so I'll probably get results in about a week. Probably more gaming posts incoming.
scalyshoujo: Neutral (pic#11476528)
Welp, I'm finally getting the weird mole on my foot looked at tomorrow. Hopefully it's either benign or they can chop it off right away.
